Who Were Jesus’s Brothers? Who was Jesus Brother?
Regardless of anyone’s personal conclusion, since this can cause a lot of controversy, and in the interest of unity, consider this.
Honor thy father and mother. Honor Mary, as the mother of Jesus.
When there is another part of the body of Christ that has a different theology regarding this issue, consider the wisdom given in Acts.
Acts 5:33 But they, when they heard this, were cut to the heart, and were determined to kill them. 34 But one stood up in the council, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, honored by all the people, and commanded to put the apostles out for a little while. 35 He said to them, “You men of Israel, be careful concerning these men, what you are about to do. 36 For before these days Theudas rose up, making himself out to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves. He was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were dispersed, and came to nothing. 37 After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the enrollment, and drew away some people after him. He also perished, and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered abroad. 38 Now I tell you, withdraw from these men, and leave them alone. For if this counsel or this work is of men, it will be overthrown. 39 But if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow it, and you would be found even to be fighting against God!”
Romans 14:22 Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who doesn’t judge himself in that which he approves. 23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because it isn’t of faith; and whatever is not of faith is sin.
There is a debate about whether Jesus had brothers. Some believe he did. Some believe he did not.
I will explain both positions and also tell you what I believe and why.
There are places where translators translate words from phrases using the word “brothers” or “brother”. Some say this means physical natural brother(s). Others say that the word “brother” could mean something different in the original language.
Here is one scripture, there are others.
John 7:3 His brothers therefore said to him, “Depart from here and go into Judea, that your disciples also may see your works which you do.
There are Bible commentators who have pointed out that “brothers” can have other meanings.
In Peloubet’s Bible Dictionary it states of brother: The Hebrew word is used in various senses in the Old Testament as Any kinsman, and not a mere brother…nephew…husband…one of the same tribe…of the same people…any friend…one of the same office…a fellow man. The Word has a similar range of meanings in the New Testament.
Here is an example in the King James Version (KJV). If you read enough of the Bible and also read various versions, you can see where this kind of translation is used, where someone who is not an actual brother is called a brother. (in the sense that we normally use the term in English)
Genesis 29:12 And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father’s brother, and that he was Rebekah’s son: and she ran and told her father.
In this case, Rachel’s father was named Laban. Laban lived in Paddam-Aram, which was not next door to Jacob. Jacob was not a brother of Laban. They did not have a common mother and father or even a common mother and step-father or even a common step-mother and father. They were of two distinct families. Yes, they were relatives, but not brothers. But in this case, Jacob says he is Laban’s brother.
So the meaning of “brother” is different. When there is no translatable word, a translator will choose a best English word. And there can be a certain amount of translator interpretation in the choosing of a word. This is why it is good to read several translations, one of which should be a literal translation or at least look up the word in question in the KJV and then use a corresponding Strong’s concordance. You can study commentaries as well. These are written by scholars with extensive knowledge of the original languages and customs of the time.
You can also use an old-fashioned dictionary to learn more about the word. I say “old fashioned” because society is in the midst of trying to change definitions of words when it suits a particular political agenda. Woe to those who call evil good and good evil. Try to find an older dictionary with the more traditional meaning of the word in question, not a politically altered dictionary.
In any case, this type of use of “brother” has led to the confusion about whether Jesus had brothers.
Genesis 29:12 And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father’s brother, and that he was Rebekah’s son: and she ran and told her father.
Here is another example. In this case, Jacob, his wives (this is prior to the law where a man had one wife) and Jacob’s children have left Laban, (Laban is Jacob’s father-in-law), to return to Jacob’s home country. Laban finds out that Jacob has left, catches up with him and says this about not saying “good-bye” to everyone.
Genesis 31:28 And hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? thou hast now done foolishly in so doing.
While Laban did have two actual daughters, Rachel and Leah, there is no record of Laban having any physical sons that left on the journey with Jacob. These “sons” would have been his eleven grandsons. And as for the daughters, at this point, Laban only had one granddaughter, Dinah, and two daughters, Rachel and Leah.
Even today in English we have phrases like,
“my brother from another mother”
or “how are you doing, Bro?”
Here is another instance of how familial terms are used differently than today. This passage of scripture refers to Josiah. King David was the first king of Judah. Josiah was the 16th king of Judah. Yet the passage refers to “David his father”. The point is, the Bible refers to family lines differently than we do.
II (2) Chronicles 34:2 (KJV) And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.
I personally believe that Jesus did not have flesh-and-blood brothers, but that this was a translated assumption.
Here is a Bible study that goes into that topic in more depth.
But beyond the question of translation, I believe there is another reason why we can know that Jesus did not have a flesh-and-blood brother.
Jesus, as firstborn, was responsible for taking care of his mother after Joseph’s death. We can assume Joseph died earlier because we never see him the whole time of Jesus’s ministry, not even once after Jesus started his ministry. Also, Joseph was not at the foot of the cross at Jesus’s death.
Joseph was not Jesus’s flesh-and-blood father, as Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit in the Virgin Mary’s womb. However, Joseph was given, as foster-father, the job of protecting and providing for Jesus and Mary. Joseph took them to Egypt when the angel told him to and brought them back when instructed to by God. Joseph provided for the family by working as a carpenter.
At the cross, Jesus, as a son who followed the Ten Commandments, as a Son who never sinned, as a Son who always did the will of the Father, even unto death on the cross, that same Son, Jesus, knowing he was dying on the cross, his responsibility as a firstborn son would have been to transfer the responsibility of taking care of his mother to the next familial male sibling, if there had been one. If Jesus had a flesh-and-blood brother, he would have transferred the responsibility to that man. However, Jesus did not. Instead, he transferred that responsibility to John, one of the 12 disciples.
In regards to the word “firstborn”, Ellicott’s commentary here states this:
Till she had brought forth her first-born son.–The word “firstborn” is not found in the best MSS*. The questions which meet us here, unprofitable as they are, cannot be altogether passed over. What bearing have these words on the widespread belief of Christendom in the perpetual maidenhood of Mary? On what grounds does that belief itself rest?
*MSS is an abbreviation for “manuscripts”, meaning the orginal documents in the original languages
The Pulpit Commentary states this:
“firstborn,” which suggested to a Jew rather consecration (Luke 2:23) than the birth of other children (comp. Bishop Lightfoot on Galatians, p. 270, edit. 1890); yet it is a reasonable inference from the passage as a whole that the οὐκ ἐγίνωσκεν was not continued after the birth of the Son. Whether, however, other children were born to Mary or not, the true text of this passage gives no hint.
Dying on the cross, Jesus transfers responsibility of the care of his mother to the disciple John, who later wrote the gospel of John; as well as First, Second, and Third (I, II, and III) John; and the Book of Revelation.
John 19:26 Therefore when Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour, the disciple took her to his own home.
As stated in the beginning of this post, there can be controversy over this question which becomes a point of disunity.
In my opinion, the bigger question, in the interest of unity within the body of Christ, is that regardless of anyone’s personal opinion on the matter, Mother Mary needs to be respected.
She is the mother of Jesus. For unity in the body of Christ, all believers and denominations should respect Mother Mary. All peoples should respect Mother Mary.
Again, regarding anything else:
While to some these questions are a matter of curiosity, to others a matter of theology, the most important question for any of us is if we are born again and doing what the Lord God wants of each of us to do individually within the body of Christ.
I John 2:17 (Darby) And the world is passing, and its lust, but he that does the will of God abides for eternity.

We See Through a Glass Darkly
I Corinthians 13:12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, even as I was also fully known.
I Corinthians 13:13 (YLT) for we see now through a mirror obscurely, and then face to face; now I know in part, and then I shall fully know, as also I was known;
What does it mean to see through a glass darkly?
It means it is really hard to really comprehend what you are seeing.
This relates to understanding as well. There is a saying that “the lightbulb went on”, or that you have a “light bulb moment”.
It means a person really understands the topic at hand. Teachers look for this light of recognition in the faces and countenances of the students they teach.
If a person is not “getting the point” or if a person is “seeing through a glass darkly”, are there ways to clean the glass? What can be done? Are there ways to shed more light on the topic at hand?
The Apostle Paul prayed this prayer as a model we can pray as well.
Ephesians 1:15 For this cause I also, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which is among you, and the love which you have toward all the saints, 16 don’t cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers, 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him, 18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope of his calling, and what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to that working of the strength of his might 20 which he worked in Christ, when he raised him from the dead and made him to sit at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule, authority, power, dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come. 22 He put all things in subjection under his feet, and gave him to be head over all things for the assembly, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
Another way to increase light is to follow what you do understand as fully as you can. As you do, new points of awareness or steps become more apparent.
If you are walking with someone outside in the yard, and the other person is holding the flashlight, if you want more light what do you do? Do you walk closer to the person? Or do you walk farther away from the person? Get as close to the light as you can and you will have more light.
Proverbs 4:18 But the path of the righteous is like the dawning light
that shines more and more until the perfect day.
Isaiah 2:5 (KJV) O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord.
Meditate on the Word of God.
Psalm 119:130 The entrance of your words gives light.
It gives understanding to the simple.

Which is more powerful, the world, the flesh, or the devil?
Kraków A-595 kościół św. Józefa ul. Zamoyskiego 2 detal ambona b.jpg
I John 2:1 My children, these things I write to you in order that ye may not sin; and if any one sin, we have a patron with the Father, Jesus Christ [the] righteous;
2 and *he* is the propitiation for our sins; but not for ours alone, but also for the whole world.
3 And hereby we know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
4 He that says, I know him, and does not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;
5 but whoever keeps his word, in him verily the love of God is perfected. Hereby we know that we are in him.
6 He that says he abides in him ought, even as *he* walked, himself also [so] to walk.
7 Beloved, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment, which ye have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye heard.
8 Again, I write a new commandment to you, which thing is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light already shines.
9 He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in the darkness until now.
10 He that loves his brother abides in light, and there is no occasion of stumbling in him.
11 But he that hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and knows not where he goes, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
12 I write to you, children, because [your] sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.
13 I write to you, fathers, because ye have known him [that is] from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked [one]. I write to you, little children, because ye have known the Father.
14 I have written to you, fathers, because ye have known him [that is] from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and ye have overcome the wicked [one].
15 Love not the world, nor the things in the world. If any one love the world, the love of the Father is not in him;
16 because all that [is] in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world is passing, and its lust, but he that does the will of God abides for eternity.
18 Little children, it is [the] last hour, and, according as ye have heard that antichrist comes, even now there have come many antichrists, whence we know that it is [the] last hour.
19 They went out from among us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have surely remained with us, but that they might be made manifest that none are of us.
20 And *ye* have [the] unction from the holy [one], and ye know all things.
21 I have not written to you because ye do not know the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? *He* is the antichrist who denies the Father and the Son.
23 Whoever denies the Son has not the Father either; he who confesses the Son has the Father also.
24 As for *you* let that which ye have heard from the beginning abide in you: if what ye have heard from the beginning abides in you, *ye* also shall abide in the Son and in the Father.
25 And this is the promise which *he* has promised us, life eternal.
26 These things have I written to you concerning those who lead you astray:
27 and *yourselves*, the unction which ye have received from him abides in you, and ye have not need that any one should teach you; but as the same unction teaches you as to all things, and is true and is not a lie, and even as it has taught you, ye shall abide in him.
28 And now, children, abide in him, that if he be manifested we may have boldness, and not be put to shame from before him at his coming.
29 If ye know that he is righteous, know that every one who practises righteousness is begotten of him.
DARBY translation
Jesus defeated the devil at the cross.
Colossians 2:15 having spoiled principalities and authorities, he made a show of them publicly, leading them in triumph by it.
This is part of a larger summary of the work of Christ, spoken of in Colossians, chapter 2.
Colossians 2:6 As therefore ye have received the Christ, Jesus the Lord, walk in him,
7 rooted and built up in him, and assured in the faith, even as ye have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.
8 See that there be no one who shall lead *you* away as a prey through philosophy and vain deceit, according to the teaching of men, according to the elements of the world, and not according to Christ.
9 For in him dwells all the fulness of the Godhead bodily;
10 and ye are complete in him, who is the head of all principality and authority,
11 in whom also ye have been circumcised with circumcision not done by hand, in the putting off of the body of the flesh, in the circumcision of the Christ;
12 buried with him in baptism, in which ye have been also raised with [him] through faith of the working of God who raised him from among the dead.
13 And you, being dead in offences and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, he has quickened together with him, having forgiven us all the offences;
14 having effaced the handwriting in ordinances which [stood out] against us, which was contrary to us, he has taken it also out of the way, having nailed it to the cross;
15 having spoiled principalities and authorities, he made a show of them publicly, leading them in triumph by it.
Luke 10:19 Behold, I give you the power of treading upon serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall in anywise injure you.
Matthew 28:18 (KJV) And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
The devil may operate through things of the world, or things of the flesh, but the devil is a defeated foe.
The authority has been given to believers, but if it is not used, there is no effect. It is put into action through knowledge and the choice to: 1. submit to God 2. resist the devil.
James 4:1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

The Body Has Many Members
This topic has been mentioned before.
The Apostle Paul talked about the body of Christ.
I Corinthians 12:14 For the body is not one member, but many. 15 If the foot would say, “Because I’m not the hand, I’m not part of the body,” it is not therefore not part of the body. 16 If the ear would say, “Because I’m not the eye, I’m not part of the body,” it’s not therefore not part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the smelling be? 18 But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body, just as he desired. 19 If they were all one member, where would the body be? 20 But now they are many members, but one body. 21 The eye can’t tell the hand, “I have no need for you,” or again the head to the feet, “I have no need for you.” 22 No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary. 23 Those parts of the body which we think to be less honorable, on those we bestow more abundant honor; and our unpresentable parts have more abundant propriety; 24 whereas our presentable parts have no such need. But God composed the body together, giving more abundant honor to the inferior part, 25 that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. 26 When one member suffers, all the members suffer with it. When one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.
To bring this concept to life, here is a short video illustrating the point. And this is only with the digestive system. It is not talking about the skeletal system, muscular system, endocrine system, nervous system or other major systems of the body.
The point is, if it is important for every part to be in place, doing its specific job, we can extrapolate from that a bit of understanding on how important it is for each part of the body of Christ to be in its exact place.
For example, in one part of this video it mentions three enzymes. What if only two are present, and not the third, what then?
Considering the body of Christ in relation to the principles of this video helps bring the realization of how important it is for each part of the body of Christ to be in its exact place, not trying to imitate another part of the body, but being where it needs to be in its specific support of the body. And when that happens, the whole body is stronger and functions better.
In a sense, the natural human body has more sense and self-preservation than the body of Christ. If injury occurs to the natural human body, white blood cells and other nutrients flow to help combat the injury. The eyes may view the injury and send messages to the brain. The brain may, though messages sent through the nervous system, may instruct the hands to wash the injured area with water to wash away germs. The various parts of the body and various systems of the body work together for healing.
But in the body of Christ, due to the fallen nature of man, there arises warfare in the body. If one part of the body is fallen or injured, often other members “pile on” and make healing more difficult.
The Apostle Paul said this. The eye can’t tell the hand, “I have no need for you,” or again the head to the feet, “I have no need for you.”
Yet that seems to occur at times.
In a natural body, can a liver say it has no need of a heart? Can the digestive tract say it has no need of a mouth? Can the muscles say they have no need of the skin or bones?
The whole human body is fity joined together, interwoven into one functioning whole.
When one part of the body is healthy, it contributes to the health of the whole body.
The body of Christ similarly must not try to take down other parts of the body, but simply recognize that they are doing a different task, which, when successful, contributes to the body as a whole.
In a physical body, certain parts of the body will probably never have any interaction. For example, a toe nail will likely never interact with a spleen.
But if a toe is stubbed, the whole body feels it.
Only certain parts of the body, for example, the blood cells that carry nutrients and oxygen, only certain parts of the body interact with more than localized parts of the body. In some way, the whole body is connected, but in terms of functional interaction, some parts of the body work in a more localized way, such as the heart, or gall bladder. The blood, on the other hand, flows throughout the whole body.
No part of the body is insignificant. And when each part is doing what it should to the greatest of its capacity, the body as a whole is strong and can do mighty exploits.

God is a God of Order
I Corinthians 14:33 for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints.
Translators have a certain latitude when it comes to translation. In other words, “truck” could be defined as a pickup, dualie, 4-wheeler, semi, or perhaps even by manufacturer name. When translating from the Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic, translators make those judgment calls, sometimes in committees with extensive notes.
So when I Corinthians 14:33 is translated, some use the word “confusion”; some use the word “disorder”.
In reality, the two are related. Where there is disorder there is confusion.
There can be disorder in various ways: in a church, household, family or individual life.
There can be disorder in the body of Christ, where one part of the body tries to play the part of another part of the body.
There are many ways to approach the topic of disorder. There can be disorder in a sports team, where players are not working in unity. There can be disorder on a medical staff.
For purposes of this post, the topic will center around disorder|order on an everyday basis.
Much more can accomplished the more perfectly you can order your environment and day.
Another word for “ordering” a day would be walking in a certain “way” and the Bible has many verses about way(s), path(s), and pathways. Here are a few.
(KJV) Psalm 25:1 Unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
2 O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me.
3 Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause.
4 Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths.
5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.
6 Remember, O Lord, thy tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old.
7 Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness’ sake, O Lord.
8 Good and upright is the Lord: therefore will he teach sinners in the way.
9 The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.
10 All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.
11 For thy name’s sake, O Lord, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great.
12 What man is he that feareth the Lord? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.
13 His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth….
This is intended to be extremely practical on a day-to-day basis. While it is recognized that this could also apply to “enemies” in other considerations, this will be about day-to-day “enemies” in disorder, for example, strugging to find what you need when you need it, or forgetting to pack something that you need for a trip, or forgetting to take your passport to the airport.
This will only be an outline, a lot more could be said, perhaps at some other time. But for now, here are a few helpful points.
First of all, recognize that organization, like nutrition, is somewhat unique to each individual. If you read various books on organization or listen to various organizational teachers, this becomes apparent. One size does not fit all. So find the system that works best for you. These are some general tips and taylor them to what works for you.
- Do it now. Whatever it is, do it now. If you think of it, do it now, or as much as you can, right now. In other words, if you remember you need to call someone Monday, and it is Saturday, at least write a note in a way that you won’t forget. If it is coming to mind, there is a reason. Deal with it now, whatever it is, now.
- If you have the same problem more than once, figure out why and deal with it. Don’t keep having the same issue day after day. Not necessary. If it is a family or group-related thing, figure out how to solve it. Get together. Find the best solution. Implement it. Yes, that takes time to get everyone together to do this, but once you find a solution, your daily/weekly time wasted dealing with that problem over and over will disappear. And if it is a group thing, there is accountability, and that really is better for everyone. Everyone becomes better as they become accountable, even if it is a voluteer organization.
- If you can’t figure it out, find someone who can. There is someone who can give you an idea that you might not be able to think of on your own, simply because you may not have the experience or background necessary. Read a book. Find someone with skills you don’t have and barter skills. If you absolutely are stuck, it is worth it to pay someone who can easily do what you find difficult to do. There is no shame is saying, this is not my skill set. There is no point in staying stuck. Someone can easily do what you find difficult to do, or can at least teach you a few skills to make your life easier.
- Give away or sell what you don’t need. You will find a simplified life is a more peaceful life. Recognize that some things are needed for a season, but perhaps you no longer are in a certain line of work, or have moved, or for any number of reasons, no longer need certain objects. When they are out of your life, you life will be simpler.

Finding Your Place Within the Body of Christ
Jesus prayed:
John 17:21 that they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that you sent me.
The importance of oneness was brought out in the book of Genesis.
Genesis 11:1 (KJV) And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.
4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
6 And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.
8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
St. Paul likens the Christian church to a body where each part of the body has a particular function.
In science we learn that for anything to happen within the human body, digestion, movement of muscles, growth, anything, a number of factors are involved. For example, in digestion there are enzymes. There are also co-enzymes which do not do the job of the enzymes, but are necessary for the enzymes to work. And so it goes. Multiple comparisons could be made.
Perhaps the thinking of the world has seeped into the body of Christ. Some people seek to have the most “likes” on Facebook. American Idol pushes the idea that unless you are the “one” winner, that you are the loser.
All that really is not in line with the thinking of the body of Christ.
There are those with the gift of administration. They should be leading in whatever capacity their gifts take them. There are those with the gift of helps. They should be helping in whatever capacity their gifts permit them to help.
If the body of Christ is ever to be one and have the power that is promised in oneness, there has to be a unity that comes from all members finding their place in the body, not trying to take the place of another, but finding their exact place and functioning there.
In reality, in a physical body, a liver cannot do the work of the kidney. The tongue can’t do the work of the hand. The eye can’t do the work of the ear or foot. It would be foolish to even try.
A liver is best being a liver. An eye is best being an eye. A hand is best being a hand. An ear is best being an ear.
When each part is fitly joined together, that is the place of increase.
Ephesians 4:16 from whom all the body, being fitted and knit together through that which every joint supplies, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.

What of the Cross?
I Corinthians 1:1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,
….
17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the Good News—not in wisdom of words, so that the cross of Christ wouldn’t be made void.
18 For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are dying, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
19 For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise.
I will bring the discernment of the discerning to nothing.”20 Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the lawyer of this world? Hasn’t God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For seeing that in the wisdom of God, the world through its wisdom didn’t know God, it was God’s good pleasure through the foolishness of the preaching to save those who believe. 22 For Jews ask for signs, Greeks seek after wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews, and foolishness to Greeks, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God; 25 because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
26 For you see your calling, brothers, that not many are wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, and not many noble; 27 but God chose the foolish things of the world that he might put to shame those who are wise. God chose the weak things of the world that he might put to shame the things that are strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of the world, and the things that are despised, and the things that don’t exist, that he might bring to nothing the things that exist, 29 that no flesh should boast before God. 30 Because of him, you are in Christ Jesus, who was made to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption: 31 that, as it is written, “He who boasts, let him boast in the Lord.”
