The Resurrection is a “Hard Stop”

Conversion of Saint Paul (Michelangelo Buonarroti)

Michelangelo, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

One of the meanings of a hard stop is a “non-negotiable endpoint”.

The resurrection is a “non-negotiable endpoint” for the discussion of the existence of God, and the claims that Jesus made about God, the nature of the kingdom of God and the necessity of being born again.  Jesus made his claims while living, taught what the Father gave to him to say while living, said he would die and rise again in three days … and Jesus did indeed rise from the dead.  The tomb is empty.

The Paschal greeting is “Christ is risen.  He is risen indeed.  Allelulia!”

The Apostle Paul (Saul) was not one of the original twelve disciples.   He originally persecuted the early church and then had a conversion experience.  At that time he was known as Saul.

Acts 9:1 And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

2 And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:

4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

7 And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.

8 And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus.

9 And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink.

10 And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.

11 And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,

12 And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.

13 Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:

14 And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.

15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:

16 For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name’s sake.

17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.

19 And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus.

20 And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.

21 But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?

22 But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.

The Apostle Paul wrote on the centrality of the resurrection of Jesus Christ as being a central point of faith.

I Corinthians 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:

6 After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.

7 After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.

8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.

9 For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

11 Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.

12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?

13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:

14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.

16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:

17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.

The Land Was Given to Israel by God – Genesis 15:18-21

Tissot Abram Guarding His Sacrifice

From Abram (name changed later to Abraham) was born Isaac, from Isaac Jacob, from Jacob the twelve tribes of Israel.  The Promise came through the line of Isaac.  The types and shadows of Christ involve Abraham, Isaac, and particularly one of the sons of Jacob, Joseph.  The prophecies of Christ come through prophets found within the nation of Israel.  The prophecies were fulfilled by those of the house and lineage of David, again, within Israel.

Genesis 15:1 After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

2 And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?

3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.

4 And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

6 And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

7 And he said unto him, I am the Lord that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.

8 And he said, Lord God, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?

9 And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.

10 And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.

11 And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.

12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.

13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.

16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.

17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.

18 In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,

20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims,

21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.

The same Bible that prophetically and accurately tells of the coming, life, and purpose of Jesus Christ also tells of the nation of Israel, from which nation the lineage of Jesus Christ exists.  Mary (mother of Jesus through the virgin birth, Jesus’s birth is celebrated at Christmas) was of the house and lineage of (King) David.  Joseph, the foster-father who protected Mary  and the child Jesus was of the house and lineage of David.  King David was the one who killed Goliath and is best known for that in children’s church.  The lineages are in the New Testament books of Matthew and Luke.

The point is, the accuracy of the Bible has been proven regarding Jesus Christ.  The same accuracy exists regarding the land of Israel as the whole lineage started with Abraham.  It’s not possible to pull out the history you don’t like.

If you remove Abraham and God’s dealings with Abraham, you also remove the story of Israel, and ultimately the coming of Jesus Christ as well.

II Peter 3:16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

I am not ignorant of the fact that there are nefarious forces involved, just as there are in Washington, D.C. , or you might say that there is a link between the two.  But that does not change the fact that God gave the land to Israel.  God ultimately will sort out the players.  But standing on the wrong side of history puts one into opposition against the purposes of God.   Ever since the Fall in the garden of Eden there has been a mixture of good and evil.

Revelation 2:9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.

Is “Used” Valid?

Photo by Rodolfo Mari on Unsplash

At this time of Christmas and gift giving, there can be tremendous pressure to meet a certain standard.  And the question arises, “is giving a used gift valid”?

It probably depends on the circles you run in.  If you see a used tricycle at a garage sale and buy it for the neighbor kid next door, is that a legitimate gift?   The kid might be happy.  The parents might not be.  It depends on their attitude and fears and desires for acceptance.

In today’s culture, there might be a lot of shaming if something is not new and shiny, but the fact is, in some circles, older is better … real estate and iconic mansions, classic cars, solid antique furniture, crown jewels, Shakespeare, the Bible.  Not everything has to be new and shiny to have value.

In the Old Testament, the Lord often told the children of Israel to take the spoil.  “Spoil” in older English vocabulary means something different than the word “spoil” means today.  We thing of spoil today as being something like moldy bread or moldy cheese that has spoiled or milk that has gone bad.   But the word “spoil” in the past was more synonymous  with the word “stuff”.  In other words, they got the stuff.  They went in and got the tents, the tools, the cooking utensils, the weapons, the clothing, the food, the animals … anything that was left by the enemy.  And … wait for it … it was all used.  So the Lord is not prejudiced against used stuff.  He told them to go get it.

You can take anything used, clean it up, spiff it up, and make it useful.  A child particularly would rather have a used tricycle than no tricycle at all.

I get it.  If you are an ambassador to a nation you need a new suit.   You don’t live in a trailer home.  You don’t show up in the Senate in army fatigues.    But neither do you go milk a cow and take care of the chickens in a tuxedo.

There is  a time and place for everything.

If someone in a household is insistent on buying everything new and shiny, it puts a tremendous pressure on the household finances that doesn’t need to be there.  It can cause a lot of trouble in the household.

I’ve heard of people who will spend $50 on a child’s outfit.  Why?  The child will outgrow it in a matter of weeks.

On the other hand, I know of people who operate more as a group.  They get some of those big black tubs with yellow lids and put children’s clothing and maternity clothing in them and pass them around within the community.  Once a family is done with a certain size clothing, there is generally someone else that can use it for a season and then again pass it on.  It takes so much stress out of the situation of having to buy everything new every time for each child.

Of course, this goes back to the circles you walk in.  There are some families or perhaps home school communities that are more communal and everyone lives at a certain basic standard … in other words, they keep things clean, laundered, repaired, and then share things.  They don’t pass on dirty, broken stuff.   They operate at a certain level of diligence and cleanliness and order.  And they are not that fussy about how “new” something is.  They have learned that material things, while necessary to life, are not the main focus in life.   But if there is a common Christian culture, these understandings should be basic anyway.
